HISTORICAL BACKROUND

Relations between Algeria and Ghana date back to the time of the struggle for national liberation. Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to support the struggle of the Algerian people for independence and to have close relations with the National Liberation Front (FLN) right from the onset of the 1 November 1954 revolution.

The relationship of solidarity on the part of Ghana was manifested when Ghana was not yet fully independent. In March 1945, in Manchester, the Fifth Pan-African Congress, upon the  insistence of President Nkrumah, called, for the first time, for the independence of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.

The first President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, recognized the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) as soon as it was created in 1958 and the anti-colonialist activist Frantz Fanon was appointed Algeria’s Ambassador to Ghana. Ghana, in turn, opened its diplomatic mission in Algeria in April 1963.

Following the independence of Algeria, relations have been strengthened to reach the aspiration of the two brotherly peoples. The late President Ben Bella paid an official visit to Ghana in 1964, which marked a new era of presidential visits between the two countries. Since then, Ghana and Algeria have enjoyed uninterrupted cordial relations over the years which testifythe true existence of deep friendship between the two peoples.
